Letter from the President – September 4, 2015

Sep 04 2015

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

With Labor Day weekend upon us and the unofficial end of the summer we should all take a look back on why this weekend should be special to you and all the men and women in the construction industry. Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Labor Day was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, who organized the first parade in New York City. After the Massacre in Chicago on May 4, 1886, U.S. President Grover Cleveland feared that commemorating Labor Day on May 1 could become an opportunity to commemorate the affair. Therefore, in 1887, the United States holiday was established in September to support the Labor Day that the Knights favored. Now more than ever with construction on the rise again in New York City and with the deaths of two young construction workers in the past week we all need to remember that the construction industry is very dangerous and there is nothing more important than the safety of your life and the lives of your fellow brothers and sisters in the construction industry.

Next week on September 12th 2015 will be the Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers International Apprentice Contest. The contest will be held at our National Training Center in Bowie, Maryland. The apprentices that will be representing Local 1 for PCC are Arkadiusz Sokolowski; Kristine Azzoli and Timothy Crowe. Representing stone will be Craig Devin, and representing on behalf of the Plasters is Jose Maldonado. On behalf of Local 1 I would like to wish all the apprentices congratulations for making this far and wish you all the best in the finals.

Also, starting next week on September 11th 2015 will be the Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers International Convention and Election. Delegrates representing BAC Locals and ADCs across North America will gather for the convention in Baltimore, where we will commemorate the 150 anniversary of the founding of the International when two local unions one from Baltimore and the other from Philadelphia met in 1865 for the “purpose of forming a national union.” We here at Local 1 are extremely proud and honored to be a part of such a great tradition and want to show our support to President James Boland and the entire International Executive Board and wish them best of luck in the upcoming election.

On behalf of myself and all of the representatives of Local 1 I want to wish you a safe and happy Labor Day week.

Sincerely,

Jeremiah Sullivan, President BAC Local 1
